SPARK is the hub of a valuable wheel. An education initiative of Fox Valley United Way, SPARK (Strong, Prepared and Ready for Kindergarten) connects underserved Aurora, Illinois, families with early education and childcare opportunities that prepare their young children for success in school and life.
Parent Survey
SPARK Early Childhood Collaboration’s mission is to empower our diverse families and children to attain full success in learning and life by ensuring that all of Aurora’s young children have equal access to exemplary Early Childhood Care and Education.
We are seeking input from Aurora parents of young children (birth to five years old) to help us ensure that families have access to a variety of resources and quality early childhood experiences to support their young children.
This survey is voluntary and all information you provide will be kept private. It should take you 10 to 15 minutes to complete. The information you provide will be used to evaluate, improve, and add services to meet the needs of Aurora families such as yourself!
SPARK Calendar
Our SPARK monthly calendar will introduce a monthly book from the Mind in the Making book collection. Each book will be accompanied with an activity that fosters the Seven Essentials Life Skills.
About Mind in the Making
Mind in the Making, a program of the Bezos Family Foundation, is an unprecedented effort to share the science of children’s learning with the general public, families and professionals who work with children and families.
Mind in the Making has partnered with First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise that provides books and educational materials for educators serving children in need, to curate a groundbreaking Mind in the Making Book Collection that combines children’s books with tips for building The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs (HarperCollins, 2010) by Ellen Galinsky

Let’s Talk About Food!
November is the perfect month to talk about food! Thanksgiving is right around the corner and food will naturally be a focal point in your home. This is the perfect opportunity to teach your little one new words and to discuss healthy food choices with them.
Activity: While grocery shopping tell your baby all about what you are looking at. Describe the color of different foods, how they feel in your hand and any other description you can think of. This is an easy built in way to teach your child new words!
Container Baby Syndrome: How Equipment Can Hinder a Child’s Development
As a parent or caretaker of an infant, you are undoubtedly aware of the numerous equipment options available for babies. Swings, bouncy seats and car seats are just a few of the products available and advertised to help babies and families. Extended time throughout the day in any or multiple of these items may lead to issues currently referred to as “Container Baby Syndrome.”
CDC Milestone APP for IOS and Android
Milestones matter! Track your child’s milestones from age 2 months to 5 years with CDC’s easy-to-use illustrated checklists; get tips from CDC for encouraging your child’s development; and find out what to do if you are ever concerned about how your child is developing.
From birth to age 5, your child should reach milestones in how he or she plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves. Photos and videos in this app illustrate each milestone and make tracking them for your child easy and fun!
